WATER SAVING TIPS

Last modified: March 24, 2007 - 10:59 AM

There are many simple things you can do in your garden to save water, money and the environment. Here are a few easy ideas to practice when you are pottering around outdoors:

  • Don't mow your lawn too short - taller grass retains water
  • Wash your car on the lawn and use a bucket - this way you can save water, as well as water and fertilise your lawn
  • If you need a watering system consider installing a drip irrigation or micro-irrigation system. They cut wastage by making sure the water goes only where you need it.
  • Regularly check your outdoor taps, pipes and plumbing fixtures for leaks. Just one dripping tap can waste 5000 litres a month
  • Instead of hosing paths, patios and driveways, use a broom or a rake. You'll be able to save up to 18 litres of water a minute
